CATECHESIS OF THE
GOOD SHEPARD

The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd  is an important part of development for our youngest parishioner as they contemplate on their relationship with Jesus and learn to love God with his or her heart.

Description:

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) is a Montessori based faith formation method for children ages 3-12 based on the pillars of Scripture and Catholic Liturgy. The educational method of Maria Montessori is centered on the developmental needs and capacities of the child. CGS has been used throughout the world for nearly 70 years. It is based on building a personal relationship with God through prayer, the Bible, and Liturgy since 1954 in Rome, Italy. Together, Sofia Cavalletti and Gianna Gobbi pursued the revelation of the young child’s religious potential through decades of careful research and observation of the children they served. Gianna Gobbi, a protege of Montessori, collaborated closely with the theological knowledge of Sofia Cavalletti, a Hebrew scholar, to develop CGS – an approach which not only appeals to the profound religious intuition of younger and older children, but also evolved from the children themselves. Today the work remains active in Rome and is used in at least 65 countries around the world.Catechesis of the Good Shepherd has a “prepared environment” called the Atrium – a dedicated space furnished with handmade materials. The prepared environment has the “prepared adult” – catechists who have received specialized formation in CGS. Along with other adults & parents willing to assist the catechist and serve the children, the prepared adult and prepared environment works together to help the “prepared child” in discovering the child’s faith unique to the child’s lived experience.

Level 1 Atrium (ages 3-6): Tue 3:30 - 5:00 pm

Helps the child to fall in love with God, assisting the child’s relationship with God and their enjoyment of that relationship.

Level 2 Atrium (ages 6-9): TBD

Is where the child’s relationship with God expands. They discover their place in the Kingdom of God through moral parables and the Bible and timelines.  Sacramental Preparation is also a part of this level.

Level 3 Atrium (ages 9-12): TBH

Is a place where the older child explores the Old Testament in greater detail, discovers the Jewish roots of our Catholic faith, and continues to find what their own role is in the Kingdom of God in the world around them.

Prayer to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton

“Lord God,

You blessed Elizabeth Ann Seton with
gifts of grace as wife and mother,
educator and foundress,
so that she might spend her life in
service to Your people.
Through her example and prayers,
may we learn to express our love
for You in love for one another.
We ask this through our Lord
Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives
and reigns with You and the
Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

Amen.”
